Upfront: No, this series is not as great as The Haunting of Hill House, which, I guess, was a foregone conclusion. It's not as engaging or as absorbing as its predecessor, though there are fascinating twists which change the entire trajectory of the show and it's certainly not what it seems at first glance. Indeed, despite its shortcomings, Bly Manor still has its charms in spades, from the charismatic cast (several actors from Hill House appear here as different characters, American Horror Story-style) to the moody atmosphere and the outstanding production values. There are some extremely powerful scenes, such as one profound extended speech that's about to become a go-to for actor showreels. However, this is a slowgoing series, and mainstream horror buffs are advised to steer clear since there's no instant gratification. I won't be revisiting this one as much as Hill House, if at all. I also can't wait to see what Mike Flanagan does next.
