Viewed: Season 2 For two seasons now, The Mandalorian is the only show left on TV that I religiously watch week by week. In fact, on most weeks, I watched a new episode mere minutes after it landed on Disney+, that's how committed I am. This show is a masterpiece from top to bottom, and this second season manages to top the first with seemingly little effort. I love the way the show is reverential to the original Star Wars (from the set design to the creatures, and the use of so many sounds from the original trilogy, plus the many Easter Eggs and callbacks) while still feeling fresh and original. I love that, while the show isn't exactly groundbreaking from a narrative standpoint (it's a little Lone Wolf and Cub, and you have the ruthless bounty hunter becoming softer, etc), it still works thanks to the superb writing and incredible execution. I also love that the show is serialised in an effective way - each week is a new adventure, meaning that there's very little in the way of filler. And while the structure of the first half of the season gets a bit predictable (Din travels to new planet, there's a problem, he solves it and moves onto the next mission), the final few episodes follow a different path and head towards an insane season finale that's everything I wanted and more. Everything looks so tangible and real, rather than glossy or distractingly digital, and the many sights and sounds of the series are thrilling to behold. The action sequences are superlative, and each episode seems to top the previous in terms of scale and intensity (the Boba Fett reintroduction episode is one of the best things I've seen all year). I also love the cast, including the many surprise guests this season as well as the returning actors who give it their all (Bill Burr is a bright spot, and Giancarlo Esposito is one of the best villains in Star Wars history). I've already mentioned the finale, but I have to emphasise just how great it is - I cried many, many tears of joy, elation and sheer emotion. It not only lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them. With the Star Wars sequel trilogy behind us, and with it not exactly living up to expectations, The Mandalorian is a genuine gift from the Star Wars Gods. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni understand exactly what fans want, and deliver exceptional fan service without anything feeling contrived. Everyone involved in The Mandalorian clearly loves Star Wars and wants to deliver the best possible show. My only complaint? Especially with the season now over, the second episode of the season now looks even more meaningless and useless. It was nothing more than a filler episode, and doesn't fit in with the overarching narrative of the season. It's not unwatchable, but I feel like we were robbed of a better episode.
